This modest drawing is less typical of Gabriel Dante Rossetti’s sensual depictions of women. The portrait, entitled Peace formed a pair with Contemplation (untraced) and was bought by the collector Leonard Valpy. Rossetti’s first cataloguer, H.C. Marillier recorded that “Mr Valpy was so particular he hardly liked even a bare arm to be shown in his pictures he bought to hang on his wall”.
