This photograph shows Lionel Arthur Morris the son of Arthur Morris, William Morris’s fourth brother. Lionel was born after William Morris’s death and is seen here as a child at the start of the twentieth century. His father, Arthur Morris, was a Colonel in the King’s Royal Rifle Corps and was six years younger than William Morris.
William Morris was directly opposed to the kind of imperialist expansionism that Arthur Morris represented, but was generally civil to him when they saw each other. In 1881 William Morris visited him ‘to see the last of Arthur before he goes to India’ and it is likely Arthur was one of the two brothers who were recorded as attending Morris’s funeral in 1896.
Following in his father’s footsteps, Lionel also joined the King’s Royal Rifle Corps and was a Lieutenant during the First World War.
