This chair was made by Phillip Clissett, a chair-maker from Herefordshire. The chair is based on a traditional design, modified by the Scottish Arts and Crafts architect James Maclaren. The same chairs were used to furnish the Meeting Room of the Art Workers Guild in London. The simplicity of these chairs prompted the furniture designer and architect Ernest Gimson (1864-1919) to seek-out Clissett and learn how to make similar ladder-back chairs under his tutorage.
