William Morris issued this design as a wallpaper and printed cotton at approximately at the same time, but the narrow upright rectangular repeat suggests it was first intended as a textile design. This example was made into a cusion cover and formerly in the collection of Lucy Faulkner Orrinsmith (1839-1910), an artist friend of William Morris and who also worked for his firm.
