Artist led print workshop - KS1
Learn about William Morris the designer and how his love of nature inspired his work. This session is led by a professional artist who will teach the children how to create patterns using wood blocks.
Workshops are held in the Learning Centre on the top floor of the Gallery. Students are introduced to the life and work of William Morris, with each session including a practical element and a collection tour.

Inspiring a Campaign – KS2
Morris was a powerful campaigner for social justice and his influence is still cited today by leading activists and thinkers. In this session, students examine 19th Century political pamphlets and posters produced by the Socialist League and create protest placards based on a contemporary campaign or issue.

The Art of Storytelling – KS2
Explore visual storytelling by William Morris and his friends, in works such as George and the Dragon and Beauty and the Beast. Learn how to read stories in artworks and how rich, descriptive language can be evoked. In this session, pupils retell and perform stories to their classmates providing imaginative starting points for further creative writing back in school.

Tile decoration workshop - KS2
Autumn 2024 sees the opening of William Morris & Art from the Islamic World. The exhibition will also coincide the launch of a brand new workshop, developed and delivered by artist Sba Shaikh.
The workshop will introduce children to Morris’s extensive collection of objects produced in areas where Islam was the dominant religion. Sba will lead a tile decorating workshop, taking inspiration from pieces included in the exhibition. Students will explore different motifs and colours to create a design for an individual ceramic tile.
All workshops include a guided tour of the exhibition.

Sensory workshop for younger students
The sessions include a sensory tour of the museum, stories about the life of William Morris, as well as a printing session.
We work with smaller group sizes and can make adaptations to suit the needs of your students. These sessions are particularly suited to nurture groups, students with additional needs and EYFS.

Agitate, Educate, Organise! – KS3 / KS4 Citizenship / PSHE / History
Throughout his life William Morris was always concerned with creating a better world. When he was 50, Morris’ belief in the need for social change became so strong, he became a radical socialist. In this workshop, students explore campaign methods adopted by Morris and compare these to contemporary campaigns. They develop an activity to address a Citizenship issue: how to make their voice heard, make a difference and bring about change.

Artist masterclass - KS4
An opportunity for students to work with a professional artist printmaker to learn specialist techniques and processes. These bespoke workshops offer an in-depth exploration of Morris’s work. Half day or full day sessions are available.
Workshops are held in the Learning Centre on the top floor of the Gallery. Students are introduced to the life and work of William Morris,with each session including a practical element and a collection tour.
TIMINGS
Workshops are available to book on Tuesday or Thursday. Half day sessions are 3.5 hours starting at either 10.00 or 12.00. Full day sessions are 10.00 – 15.00
We can accommodate up to 20 students per session.

Education group visits
Gallery tours
Groups will be split in half upon arrival. A member of the learning team will take half on a 30-minute gallery tour, whilst the other half spend time sketching in Gallery spaces, accompanied by school staff.
Drawing paper, clipboard and pencils are provided.

60 to 90-minute slots can be booked for self-led visits. These are free sessions and must be arranged in advance.

Is there a charge to visit the Gallery?
Entry is free, but group visits must be booked in advance.
Paid workshops can be booked on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.
Guided Tours and Self Led visits can be booked on Wednesdays.

Is there somewhere we can eat lunch?
We can only offer a lunch space with morning workshop bookings due to space limitations. If you would like to reserve this, please indicate on the booking form.
We regret that we are unable to offer an indoor lunch space for self-led groups.
Do I need to advise about specific needs in my class/group?
Yes please, our facilitators may need to adjust the session. Please provide information on allergies, hearing/visual/mobility impairments, coordination issues, behavioural needs and ESOL. Please be aware that the learning studio is on the second floor which can be accessed by stairs or lift.
Can I visit the Gallery before my school trip?
Pre-visits are welcomed. You can visit the Gallery exhibitions spaces at any time we are open to the public. If you would like to see the Learning Studio, please email us to arrange a time wmg.schoolbookings@walthamforest.gov.uk
Is there a cancellation fee?
Once we have received your booking confirmation form the booking is complete and all admin processes will be actioned. Any changes or cancellations will be charged on a sliding scale:
- Cancellations within one week of the workshop date will incur the full cost of workshop or facilitators’ fee if the session is rescheduled
- Cancellations within two weeks of the workshop date will incur 50% cost of the workshop or facilitators’ fee (whichever is the lowest) or £20 admin fee if the session is rescheduled
- Cancellations within four weeks of the workshop date will incur 25% cost of the workshop or £20 admin fee if the session is rescheduled
Is there parking?
Yes, we have space onsite for up to 2 minibuses, but please let us know in advance so we can reserve this for you. Also, there is a coach parking bay opposite the gallery on Forest Road.
What happens when we arrive for a workshop?
A member of the Learning Team will welcome you and take you up to the Learning Studio. After a brief health and safety introduction your workshop facilitator will begin the session.
What happens if we arrive late?
It is important that you arrive at the agreed session time. We will do our best to adapt timings if you arrive late, but unfortunately this isn’t always possible.
Can we purchase items from the gift shop?
Our shop is cashless. Members of staff are welcome to make purchases using a credit or debit card on behalf of the students. We have goody bags which can be purchased in advance, details will be shared on your booking confirmation email.
Do you have behaviour guidelines?
Teachers / Group leaders remain responsible for children’s behaviour whilst visiting the Gallery – this includes in the workshops. Our facilitators will direct the learning and focus on delivering an inspiring and engaging workshop. School staff and accompanying adults must appropriately manage the behaviour of the group. Children must not be left unaccompanied at any time, even if one of our Gallery staff or volunteers is present.
How many students can we bring?
We request that maximum group sizes are 30 students + accompanying adults. If you need to bring more than one group, please arrange this in advance with our Learning Team.
How can I give my feedback?
