Small corner chair with turned ebonised wood (possibly beech) framework, the two sides decorated with turned rails and two cruciform back supports, with removable rush seat, the legs tapering to small turned foot; the uprights, legs and rails decorated with narrow incised bands. Similar in style to the “Argylle” chairs (see plate 212 p. 136 “English Furniture 1880 – 1915” by Pauline Agius, published by Antique Collector’s Club, 1978) which appeared in Liberty’s catalogues c. 1890 “Dining Room and Library Furniture”, although these, like the Morris & Co. Sussex type rush-seated furniture, have rushing fastened directly to the wood framework, not a drop-in rush seat. Chairs with similar back design are published in Morris & Co. catalogues, but not this actual chair.
