This design of alternating swans and leaf scroll motif is attributed to William Morris c.1862 and was manuaftured in the Netherlands after 1870. The tiles were originally decorated in Morris & Co.’s workshops on an imported Dutch tin-glaze tile but Morris ltransferred production to the Netherlands c.1870, this tile is slightly larger and decorated using the more durable ‘in-glaze’ technique, as opposed to the hand painted ‘on-glaze’ technique of the earlier smaller tiles (see C178&a).
